FLL's weekends overlap with the cruise port next door: Saturday and Sunday mornings, half the terminal is disembarked cruise passengers flying home with all their luggage. Four terminals sit in a row and none of them connect after security yet (a walkway joining Terminals 2 and 3 is still being built), so the terminal is worth confirming before you pick a lane off US-1.
The terminals are compact once you're inside. The crowd surges track who's arriving (cruise turnaround days, school holidays) more than anything about the building itself. Each terminal runs its own checkpoint, so the crowd in front of you belongs to that terminal and says nothing about the others.
The plan allows 25 minutes for a standard lane on a busy but normal morning. With TSA PreCheck, that drops to 15 minutes. A checked bag lengthens the one before it.
The airport sits right off I-95 and US-1, minutes from both Fort Lauderdale and the Port Everglades cruise terminals. If your trip starts at a cruise ship, the shuttle queue at the port is the longest step and it's before the drive. Neither Brightline nor Tri-Rail reaches the terminals directly. Both run a shuttle bus from their stations, so the train ride still ends with a bus.

Use the airline desk for bags: documents get checked and counters often close an hour out. That also covers lap infants, unaccompanied minors, and oversized bags. If your boarding pass names a boarding time, match that.
