CLT is a giant connecting hub in a mid-size city: most people in the building are changing planes, and the checkpoint surges with each departure bank. Everything runs through one terminal with all five concourses hanging off it, so you do not have to worry about picking the wrong building.
The checkpoint queues swell in waves that track the connection banks rather than the time of day, so a calm-looking Tuesday can turn into a 30-minute line in ten minutes. The lobby project finished its consolidation down to three checkpoints, and every concourse is reachable from any of them, so the door you pick decides your line rather than your gate.
The plan allows 25 minutes for a standard lane on a busy but normal morning. With TSA PreCheck, that drops to 15 minutes. A checked bag lengthens the one before it.
The drive from most of Charlotte is short and mostly predictable. The variable parts are the parking shuttle and the checkpoint, so put the buffer there instead of on the road. There is no rail to CLT. The CATS Sprinter bus from uptown is the only transit option, which makes parking a real part of the plan, not an afterthought.
