The drive is the part you can look up

A maps app covers the drive to YYZ. Bag drop, security, and the walk to your gate usually take longer, and they are the steps people misjudge.

Here is the same plan drawn to scale. The first block is travel; the next two are the airport. A checked bag grows one, a far gate grows the other.

How early should I be at YYZ?

Be at YYZ two hours before a domestic departure and three before an international one. At an airport this size, treat those as a floor. They assume a normal day, not a holiday crush or a long security line.

More

Pearson is two airports as far as your morning is concerned. Terminal 1 is Air Canada and its Star Alliance partners, Terminal 3 is WestJet, Porter, Air Transat and most of the rest, and they are far enough apart that turning up at the wrong one costs you the LINK train and a second walk. Check which terminal your boarding pass names before you pick a parking garage.

Security at YYZ

Each terminal runs its own checkpoints and they don't share a queue, so the wait depends on which one your airline uses rather than on Pearson as a whole. The early-morning bank and the late afternoon are the two busy stretches of a normal day, and March break and the last week of December run long all day.

More

The plan allows 25 minutes for a standard lane on a busy but normal morning. With NEXUS, that drops to 15 minutes. A checked bag lengthens the one before it.

A flight to the United States out of YYZ is precleared: you go through the ordinary checkpoint and then a US border officer sees you, both before you board and both inside the same hall. Set Flight to “Transborder” and the plan adds that inspection as a 35-minute row under security. Airports ask for more time on a US departure than a domestic one, so treat what the plan lands on as the floor and give yourself more of a cushion than you would at home.

Getting to Toronto Pearson International

UP Express reaches Terminal 1 from Union Station in about 28 minutes and runs every fifteen, which makes it the most predictable way in from downtown; from Terminal 3 you ride the free LINK train over first. Drivers come off the 401 or the 427, and both back up well before the terminal loop does. A parking garage faces each terminal across an enclosed walkway, so parking and returning a rental car are walks here rather than shuttle rides.

Common questions

How early should I get to YYZ for a domestic flight?

Be at YYZ two hours before a domestic departure and three before an international one. At an airport this size, treat those as a floor. They assume a normal day, not a holiday crush or a long security line. Treat a flight to the United States as the three rather than the two: it clears US customs at YYZ before boarding. The plan above works back from there through security, bag drop, parking and the drive to a leave-by time.

How long is security at YYZ?

The plan allows 25 minutes for a busy-but-normal standard lane. With NEXUS it drops to 15 minutes, and you can edit either one to what you actually see. A checked bag lengthens the step before it. Checkpoint detail for YYZ is under Security at YYZ above.

How early should I get to YYZ for a flight to the US?

Earlier than for a domestic departure. US-bound flights out of YYZ are precleared, which means an American border officer sees you here before you board instead of at the other end after you land. That inspection sits under security as its own 35-minute step, in the order you meet them: CATSA screens you, then CBP does.

Boarding stays where a domestic departure has it, because preclearance is what lets these board like short-haul flights. Bag drop and the walk to your gate are unchanged, and NEXUS still applies to the screening step. The border wait is a normal-day estimate rather than a published number, so give it room.

How early should I get to YYZ for an international flight?

Earlier than for a domestic one. International boarding starts 45 minutes before departure instead of 30, which pulls every step earlier. Use the airline desk for bags: documents get checked and counters often close an hour out. That also covers lap infants, unaccompanied minors, and oversized bags. If your boarding pass names a boarding time, match that.

When should I leave for YYZ?

Work backward from departure: boarding, time at the gate, the walk, security, bag drop, parking, then the drive (30 minutes in the default plan). Replace the drive with your own route. The leave-by moment is the first travel row, "Drive to YYZ" by default.

Taking the train instead? The Amtrak station pages use the same kind of plan without security. Flying from somewhere not listed? The airport leave time calculator has the same rows with your own numbers, and the wake-up time calculator runs it back to the alarm.

The countdown to your flight, on your Lock Screen

Start the plan in the app, and the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island show the time left, with a bar that fills as each step passes.

Glance at it in the terminal without opening the app.

Every step also gets its own alert, and sharing the plan gives whoever is driving the same leave time, with alerts on their phone.
