The deadline here is the cutoff, not departure: miss it and the car does not travel. Use 2:00 PM if your vehicle is oversized, a motorcycle, towing a trailer, or booked for priority offloading. Drag the deadline back half an hour and every row above it moves.

You hand the car over, then wait in the terminal until boarding is called. The queue to check a vehicle in is the step that varies: arriving at the front of the window is a different experience from arriving near the end of it.

Amtrak advises two hours, which puts you at Lorton by 2:00 PM. The plan aims about fifteen minutes inside that, because the check-in cutoff is firm: 2:00 PM for oversized vehicles, motorcycles, trailers and priority offloading, and 2:30 PM for everything else, against a 4:00 PM departure. Work backward from the check-in cutoff, not departure: 2:30 PM, not 4:00 PM. Then the handover, the queue, and the drive (35 minutes in the default plan). The leave-by moment is the first travel row.
It does not work that way here. Auto Train coach seats are assigned when you check in, and sleeper accommodations are booked in advance, so arriving early does not improve where you sit. Arriving early protects the cutoff, which is the only thing it needs to protect.
There is no later departure that day. The Auto Train runs once each way, so a missed check-in is a missed day. Treat 2:30 PM as the deadline (2:00 PM if your vehicle is oversized, a motorcycle, towing a trailer, or booked for priority offloading).
The cutoff makes it feel closest to one, but there is no screening and no boarding pass to collect. What you are making is a vehicle handover with a wall-clock deadline, and once the car is checked the waiting happens in the terminal. Budget for the queue, not for a security line.
