Puck drop is later than you think

The time on your ticket is when the puck drops. The teams warm up well before that and the anthem and the opening ceremony run right up to it. Aim for ten to fifteen minutes earlier if you want to be in your seat for any of it.

Screening at the doors usually decides it. Every NHL arena runs walk-through detectors, and the queue is the gap between arriving and being inside. People who miss the start rarely misjudge the drive; they misjudge the lot walk and the line.

Getting to SAP Center

Most of the crowd arrives inside the same half hour on a weeknight, and the last mile is surface streets off the 87 and the 880 that are already carrying downtown traffic home. Diridon Station is across Santa Clara Street from the doors, so Caltrain, VTA light rail, ACE and Capitol Corridor all land you a five-minute walk away. BART extension work has started around the station and VTA says the walk in from Diridon stays open throughout, which is the better reason to take the train here.

The arena sits at the west edge of downtown with about 1,500 spaces in the lot next door, part of the three thousand or so within a third of a mile. The lot fills from Santa Clara Street and Julian Street and opens two hours before the game, which for a seven o’clock start is the middle of the evening commute. Work on the BART extension takes lots around the station out of service for months at a time, so check what is open before you count on one.

When should I leave for SAP Center?

Work backward from puck drop: minutes in your seat beforehand, walk to your section, security screening, walk from the lot, parking, then the drive (20 minutes in the default plan). That puts leave-by at 5:52 PM for a 7:00 PM puck drop. Change the puck drop time and every row moves.

It is whatever the team has scheduled, and these are local times rather than a converted national window.
